After 20 years of door opening sounds, buddy icons, and away messages, AOL's Instant Messenger is set to shut down for good on December 15th, 2017.
In a tumblr post entitled "One Last Away Message" AIM is given a proper eulogy. Unsurprisingly, the service is being offed because "the way in which we communicate with each other has profoundly changed."
Let us thank AIM for all it has done for socially interacting online. As the little yellow AIM man rides off into the sunset on his little yellow horse, let us wave at him until he fades into the horizon.
